Our Recreation 4WD Course – 4WD-2 is perfect for either complete beginners, or drivers with some experience who want to take their skills to the next level. This course will give you the knowledge and practical skills to confidently operate your four-wheel drive vehicle in a variety of situations.
You will learn about the features of your 4WD, such as when to use low and high range gears; how to identify hazards and minimize risks to the safety of your passengers, your 4WD, and avoid damaging the environment. You’ll also learn the limitations of your vehicle: what it can and can’t do.
You will learn the appropriate driving techniques to use in different types of terrain, and you’ll learn the various techniques for getting your vehicle unstuck when it’s bogged.
We also have a Recreational 4WD Course – 4WD-1 which only briefly covers recovery techniques such as snatch strap, sand mats, airbags, and winching.
One-on-one Training
Trainings are delivered in your 4WD vehicle with the instructor sitting in your car. You can bring up to 3 students in the car. There is a fixed price per vehicle, regardless of how many students you bring in the car.

Course Contents
This 4WD training course is made up of an information session followed by practical lessons in or around your 4WD vehicle. The following lessons will be covered:
General Operator Safety
These topics will be covered in the classroom:
- Operator responsibilities
- Defensive 4wd driving techniques
- Hazard identification, risk management
- Communication methods

Static Practical
These lessons will be conducted outside, around your 4WD:
- Trip Planning
- Vehicle preparation
- Vehicle capability identification
Off Road Driver Training
These hands-on lessons take place in your 4wd vehicle:
- Off road driving techniques
- Vehicle placement in rough terrain
- Hazard identification, risk management
- Obstacle identification
- Identify and implement equipment and techniques to negotiate obstacles
- Practical in the field recovery techniques (how to get un-bogged)
We also have a 6-hour Recreational 4WD Course – 4WD-1 which only briefly covers recovery techniques such as snatch strap, sand mats, airbags, and winching.
What You Must Bring
- Your 4WD vehicle, fully fuelled and in roadworthy condition.
- Solid enclosed footwear must be worn at all times
- Any recovery gear that you have
- Food and drink (plenty of water)
